Suspect arrested after standoff

A suspect was arrested Monday after a standoff led to the use of tear gas.

According to a statement by the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, members of the department along with the Covington County Incident Response Team and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, responded to Lattice Road, north of Red Level, just inside Conecuh County, where Michael Dewayne Brogden was located. The Conecuh County Sheriff’s Office was advised of the situation, officials said.

Brogden was wanted on felony warrants in Butler County as well as misdemeanor warrants in Covington County.

The team arrived at approximately 1:30 p.m. where Brogden was summoned to come to the door of his camper, but there was no response.

“All means were exerted to capture (Brogden) without injury; however, Brogden would not comply,” according to the CCSO statement.

At 3:14 p.m., the Incident Response Team administered what was described by the CCSO as a “healthy dose” of tear gas. At that time, Brogden became compliant and he was placed under arrest. He is being held at the Butler County Jail without bond.

“The IRT is always professional and compassionate to prevent injury. In this case, no injury was made. This was a successful call out. I commend all of the agencies involved and know that we have the best in Covington County. Working together as one team will always be successful. With this bunch of men, failure is not an option. I commend their tenacity and work ethic,” said Covington County Sheriff Blake Turman.

Agencies involved in the operation included the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, Butler County Sheriff’s Office, ALEA, and police departments from Opp, Andalusia, Gantt and Florala.
